I was dissatisfied with the articles in the school newspaper debating the topic of contention Harry Potter vs. LOTR. Neither article was very well written, and the paper failed to provide any sort of indication as to what the student body seemed to think. Harry potter is a mere child, the story reflects the sort of frivolous and cliche ideas that i would expect from a nickelodeon cartoon. In LOTR tolkien creates a rich tale full of twists, subplots, allegory, and hidden themes. All harry potter is is a pop literature fad. Tolkein created a lasting work of fantasy that fills the reader with mistique and intrigue. Rowling fills us with teenage hormone driven affection and a simple good guys vs. bad guys plot. This is my opinion, post what you think.

Well i personally think that the Lord of Rings is the best. This is because the Lord of the rings has a better theme. its about many hobits who are trying to destroy a ring that is a symbol of complete evil. Yet Harry Potter is a bunch of friends flying cars and having fun with unknown creatures. After the first two movies of Harry Potter it begins to bet boring yet with the Lord of the Rings it does not end with one movie it ends you wondering, wantring to watch the next one. Thats why Lord of the rings is sooo much better then Harry potter

I don't really have anything further to add argument wise, but my choice is LOTR

I think Harry Potter is better the Lord of the Rings. There is more magic and action in Harry Potter than in Lord of the Rings. So I say rock on Harry Potter.

Lord of the Rings...duh
I mean Harry Potter is good and well written and is quite enthralling BUT does it introduce anything new to the genre? Heck, the genre was practically started by Tolkien! With the introduction of new types of creatures and the use of un-archetypal fantasy beings (Wizards, elves, Dragons, Orcs/Goblins)...for crying out loud, the wizard stereotype got much of its basis, it seems, from good old Gandalf.
However, Harry Potter has its strong points. The characterization is interesting and done well (it takes one only a moment or two to clearly decide whether or not they like a character), the environment (while not on nearly as wide a scape as Middle Earth) grabs the senses.
However, LOTR does all this AND MORE

While some people sem to think that it is ok to compare the two, I say that it is like somparing apples to oranges. It seems to me that Harry Potter is written for a ounger audience in mind. There are 1st graders who read Harry Potter. How may 1st graders do you know that read LOTR? My point exactly. But if I had to choose, I would say Harry Potter, although I think that the LOTR movies were made better than the Harry Potter movies.
