I would be more diligent about making sure that students are on task. I do admit that I often get off task (and for quite a while sometimes), and that some students basically waste entire class periods a at a time (ahem). I do realize that this sounds childish, a not very independent way of thinking, and against the ITS philosophy, but I certainly believe that it would help productivity. I wouldn't listen to me though, because it's very late and I'm slightly crazy (I only joke (ahem)).

I wouldn't listen to me though, because it's very late and I'm slightly crazy (I only joke (ahem)). I struggle with this. On one hand, ITS means I Trust Students. I trust them to take responsibility for their work and make good choices as to how they use their time in class. Remember, freedom of choice, no freedom of consequences. On the other hand, I prefer to spend my time and effort with those students who are working hard to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner. As long as students do not interfere with my right to teach or other students' right to learn, I tend to sometimes allow students to churn in class. But if you "churn, your grade burns!".

If I were the teacher I wouldnt do group tests. In my opinion they dont work. I hate having to do group projects and things where everyone gets the same grade, yet some people worked twice as hard as others. and it seems to be the same exact thing when its a test. Many people just use the others to do the work and sit back, while they get to recieve the same grade.

I agree and for all the reasons you mentioned. although usually on my group tests, everyone gets an individual grade! I have had students in the same group get 95 and 50!!!!!!!!!!! But working in groups is the norm in many jobs today and group skills need to nurtured as well as individual skills. And with holistic grading.....checks and check +++'s....it isn't quite the same as everyone getting the same grade.

I think the online homework should be divided in two parts; one for the test-format questions, and one with challenge questions for extra credit. I used a lot of time trying to figure out the challenge questions on the forces homework, and then I realized today that they won't be on the test.

I used a lot of time trying to figure out the challenge questions on the forces homework, and then I realized today that they won't be on the test. Maybe what would work is to order the questions from easiest to easier to average to challenging to XC. XC questions would count zero points for scoring purposes, but if students did the work they could earn XC quality points. On-line HW is new to ITS so I'm learning how to best use it to help all students learn and maximize learning capacity. That's why we need a range of questions for each HW assignment.

the online hws are pretty challenging if you don't know the concepts. I don't know, if i was a teacher i would spend less time giving mini-lectures on equations but i would give lectures (mini) on the logic and concept behind the equation (watching Hiewett helps a lot). Some people, like me, can't really apply an eqution unless i know why. po yun tung

Now that we've been in ITS for some time now, i actually think the system works fairly well. Not only do students get to socialize, it also helps us learn to be more independent and trust ourselves to do the work on time. However, if i were the teacher, i think i would try and increase the amount of student mode and then if students still have questions, work with smaller groups and give lectures to those who want it. 'Cause i agree with what someone else said, the lectures, lvds, and macs are all kind of redundant, and in my opinion, not everyone needs all of them.

I felt that I was much better prepared for the test that we took today than on the two previous ones. On eof the main contributing reasons to this was becasue of the mini lectures that Mr. Fisher gave which we took notes on. I find that I understand the concepts much better hearing a teacher say them and then write them down rather than just copying them off of a physics quiz or mac.

Good point Clark! And you "A"ced the test! A perfect score! KUTGW Mr Fisher
PS the key is to take notes and use them to practice solving problems!

alright, its time for my weekly suggestion. Heres all that i have to complain about, i like working, and the past week we've started to get away from our game, focusing more on practices tests and lectures, rather then group work and macs. At the beginning of the year i would never have said anything like this, but ITS has really made me a different person.

Being on the A team is delicious. But doing lots of extra credit for contracts is not. I did all the online extra credit like the eggs and competency goals on the second unit, and now i don't have much left to do.

I agree with tong-tong, after the first few units it becomes much harder to find XC to do to bring your folder grades up from the orginal 88.
